EITM partners response to the COVID-19 outbreak
EIT Manufacturing Partners continue to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic with a variety of initiatives since its beginning. Updates and new initiatives will be included over time – send us a heads-up if you have an initiative you want us to promote in our website and across our Social Media platforms.
We have highlighted some of the initiatives on our EIT Manufacturing web site – 3D printing of equipment, low-cost respirators, and computing capacity.
To name a best practice from our partner, CEA (the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, with which we share our locations in Paris, Saclay) has developed an open-source solution emergency respirator and monitor in cooperation with several hospitals, institutes and the Renault Formula 1 team. To respond to the shortage of respirators, CEA developed a low-cost respirator and monitoring solution that are already in use at French hospitals:
- CLEAR-R: an emergency respirator, tested in vivo and under consideration by the French national health agency
- CLEAR-M: a low-cost universal monitoring solution that allows emergency and transport respirators to be used on Covid patients
Do you want to know more about how to use this solution?
Contact: firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
The first CLEAR-M solution is already in use at the Paris Orsay and Garches hospitals. We have manufactured a small series of each, and the French company BA-Healthcare has entered into a non-exclusive free licence with us to manufacture CLEAR-M at scale. We have received expressions of interest from several hospitals, but also from WHO and Médecins Sans Frontières. Standard Covid-compatible respirators cost between 20.000 and 70.000 euros. The standard emergency respirators are not suitable for COVID-19 patients, but by adding the Clear-M at a cost of 500 to 1000 euros, they can be modified and used for COVID-19 patients.
